Portable Eddy Current Scanner
Midas NDT have completed the design and manufacture of a custom portable eddy current inspection system in record time with the system being taken from concept to fully operational production item in under six weeks. The system, utilising a GE Inspection Technologies eddy current instrument has been manufactured for a United Kingdom energy company.
This illustration shows the scanning system attached to an a-frame at Midas-NDT for testing purposes, however in-service the scanning frame is fitted with custom mounting facilities to quickly and easily locate on the inspection vessel.

The system electronics are housed in a portable mains powered control unit which is controlled from a standard laptop computer using Midas-NDT Zeus v3.0 data acquisition and analysis software.
Eddy current data acquisition is carried out using a GE Inspection Technologies Vector 2D eddy current instrument with the outputs being monitored by the data acquisition software and displayed as a c-scan presentation.

The scanning system is equipped with two precision servo motors to allow high resolution raster scans to be created.

A scan line is created by the main scanning axis traversing an arc created by the mechanics of the system, this arc matches the diameter of the inspection vessel.

Upon completion of a scan line, the index axis moves the eddy current probe the necessary increment.

At the end of each scan line the acquired data is processed and the c-scan presentation updated on the laptop screen.
